My name is Tess, and you should talk to me whenever you want. I write, and post others' writing, and post about writing. Also mermaids, also ridiculous(ly funny) illustrations, also whimsy. For my stories, go to the link below; for Doccubus, go to my link below for faetaccompli; for pretty, go below to mosaictiles. GLBTQ safe.

Reasons I Love Mermaids (in no particular order)
Reason Five! As a child, my favorite story was “The Little Mermaid” by Hans Christian Anderson. I loved the illustrations and how beautiful they were, and how they told the story on their own, and how the mermaid could be me, I thought. I loved the fish and how the sea was like a garden. I loved how the mermaid looked in blue, and how she stared into her love’s sleeping face and couldn’t trade that life for hers. I loved all the metaphors and imagery in the story itself, how birds became fish and the mermaid walked every moment on knives for what she most desired. I loved how the mermaid’s sisters were the ones to come and take care of her, giving something of themselves to protect her. I loved her longing for another world, even as I imagined I longed for hers. And, though I hesitate over the idea now, I loved that she could give up almost every beautiful thing she had for something she felt was even more beautiful.
Note: The illustration is from Fairy Tales (as retold by Bridget Hadaway). The book is out of print, I believe, though I have found it out in the world.
